Kitkat Square, in Cairo’s Imbaba district, stands opposite one of Cairo’s richest neighborhoods, Zamalek. It was once a place of entertainment, and escape from polite society. During the 1930’s the part of the neighborhood that bordered the Nile became famous for the floating nightclubs and bars that entertained not only the British soldiers stationed there, but partying elites and royalty. That neighborhood, Kit Kat, is still known after one of the more infamous cabarets from the colonial period, the Kit Kat Club, a legendary centre of debauchery during the second world war.
