The Lamotte Picquet was built in 1927.
The Light Cruiser was sent to the Far East (French Indochine) in 1933 and served in the waters around Vietnam and the Ducth East Indies (Indonesia).
At the fall of France, the Lamotte Picquet served with the Vichy Forces and when relations with Siam (now Thailand) became strained in 1940 the Lamotte Picquet headed a Vichy Fleet out of Cam Ranh Bay to confront the Thai Navy. On the 14th of January 1941 at the Battle of Koh Chang the French Fleet led by the Lamotte Picquet destroyed the Thai Navy.
In December 1941, after the Japanese assault on Pearl Harbour and rumours that the crew of the Lamotte Picquet would sail against the Japanese the ship was disarmed in Saigon Harbour w it remained until January of 1945 when it was sunk in Saigon Harbour by US Aircraft off aircraft carriers in the South Chin Sea.
