La ville d’Alexandrie était au XIXe Siècle le seul port de la côte méditerranéenne d’Egypte. C’est par ce port que fut acheminé le matériel nécessaire au percement du canal de Suez entre 1859 (date du début des travaux) et 1869 (date de fin des travaux). Par ailleurs, une association alimentaire de la ville d’Alexandrie existait en 1868, cf Le Progrès égyptien, 1, n° 20, de novembre 1868.
Alexandrie fut la résidence de la plus grande partie de la colonie française ayant participé à la construction du canal.
L’association alimentaire de la ville d’Alexandrie était certainement destinée à fournir une alimentation bon marché aux ouvriers expatriés travaillant pour la compagnie du Canal.
Les jetons alimentaires émis par cette association, non datés, ont une indéniable ressemblance avec les jetons métropolitains : dimensions, présentation des avers et revers, nature des aliments fournis, période d’utilisation (1859-1869).
